Grounds

Our grounds are beautiful and serene to wander, gather and reconnect with nature. With Mount Tauhara as part of the wider landscape and expansive views across Lake Taupo, take time to explore the bush tracks, enjoy moments of solitude and take in the scenic outlooks across Acacia Bay and the lake.

With park-like grounds, organic landscaped gardens and a variety of indoor gathering spaces, Tauhara Centre provides a peaceful atmosphere for every guest and visitor.

The Sanctuary

Tauhara Centre held a formal opening ceremony at The Sanctuary in March 1977. A spiritual focal point of Tauhara Centre, this is a place for silent meditation, prayer or simply being in silence.

The Sanctuary sits at the highest point on our grounds with the perfect views of Mount Tauhara, Taupo Town Centre and the lake. This seven-sided building situated a knoll apart from the main complex is a peaceful refuge and a haven for quiet reflection and inner peace.

However, it may occasionally be unavailable when retreats requiring privacy have exclusive use of the Centre. If you are planning to visit, please contact us in advance to confirm the availability of the Sanctuary.

Gathering Spaces

Within our beautiful buildings, we can receive over 120 guests. Spaces to meet, gather and connect include:

Enjoy the warmth and comfort of our wood-burning fireplaces during the colder winter months.

Make use of our complimentary Wi-Fi and AV equipment to support your conference and meeting needs.

Library

Our Library is often used for browsing or study by group participants during their stay. It is also open for casual and local visitors.

The collection of books reflects the very diverse nature of all the courses, retreats and gatherings that have occurred at Tauhara over its first 50 years. All the books are donated and have been lovingly added to the collection by our volunteer librarians.

We continue to welcome donations so that we can offer a diverse collection and share the wisdom and teachings from the many paths of humanity.

“The food was absolutely stunning, vegan, so tasty and filling. I felt so nourished when I left, not just from the food. It’s a magical place for heartfelt connections or solitude among the trees and birds.”
